Our sacred duty

Being a devotee to the Eternal path means upholding five duties throughout the course of one’s life, one of them being to honor the Earth and all its creatures. Over the centuries, increased urbanization, and abuse of innovation stimulated by the powers of greed have encouraged a gradual drift of humankind from nature. As a result, the relationship of man and the Earth has become more strained and disoriented causing mankind to forget from whence we have come and to be blinded to the direction in which we are going.

It is paramount for us to teach respect for the Earth and to bring to attention environmental issues that are all around us that can and are already impacting not just us as humans but all life upon the face of the Earth. All too often it is easy to forget when living in suburbs and cities that these concrete jungles produce and require much pollution and disturbance to make the current lifestyle possible. It is our hope that we as a society will move away from toxic methods that are used to develop our products for everyday life. In reality, there are many good alternatives, but bigger corporations choose to go the toxic route for the sake of profits as well as nefarious reasons to poison the population, i.e. Polyester shirts as opposed to eco-friendly cotton.

Brehon law regards the environment

The sacred law of the ancient Gaels called Fenecas ( Brehon law ) entails the concept of restitution, not only between people but also between people and all the world around with its creatures. For Celts, even certain trees were considered airig wedo, that is “nobles of the forest” and to unlawfully damage or cut one down would incur a fine equal to its honor price. There were other classes of shrubs and trees which had lesser fines as well. The same fines would be imposed for harm done to animals, and other natural sources. When we consider the regard for mother nature that the Celts had, its appalling to behold the millions of acres of land in our modern day and age that have been decimated to make way for greedy and cheap corporations.

What can be done?

At the rate at which things are moving with the majority of society quietly plugging along, the Earth is heading towards a bleak future environmentally if nothing is done. Currently, the powers that be have been ripping apart things faster than they can be restored. However there is motion taking place in the world, and we are coming to an age of less ignorance and we’ve also seen a move in politics in some situations. I should say that the majority of humans wouldn’t harm the environment the way it has been since it isn’t necessarily the average person’s fault, and we are a currently occupied by malevolent agencies that have citizens by the neck rendering the people almost powerless. We as individuals can start with ourselves and make more conscious decisions in what we buy, eat, wear, and what we subscribe to within reason and push for a change in legislation. All too often the poor are to blame for the endeavors of the greedy whom also manipulate the markets in what we ultimately end up buying, but we can tip the balance by choosing to be self sustainable, to grow our own food, make our own clothes, buy local, refurbish things, and take a step back to reevaluate between oneself and the Eternal One blessed be of what really matters in life. Make a decision today to keep the Earth from needless harm and destruction!
